4 Best Tips To Stay Lean While Traveling:
1. Eat a big healthy meal before your flight or fast
Just like I recommend eating a big healthy meal before going to a party, you should do the same just before leaving for the airport.
Before I left for a bachelor party in Las Vegas, I ate this PFF meal, primarily comprised of protein, healthy fats, and fiber.
These are the key nutrients to keep you feeling full, so you can skip on the airport food and airplane snacks that typically contain huge amounts of sodium, refined carbohydrates, and processed fat.
If you have an early morning flight, and weight loss is your primary goal, you could use this time to skip a few meals and increase your intermittent fasting window.
This will help keep your calories lower for the travel day, thus giving you a little more room for your vacation meals.
For example, think of your daily calorie allowance and use it on the main meals that you really enjoy.
This may mean skipping your typical snacks so you can enjoy higher calorie dinner meals, or a local treat at lunch.
You can be a little more flexible on your meal frequency during vacation as it’s only for the short-term.
Plus, here’s an example of extending your intermittent fasting window.
If you have an early morning flight, you would stop eating after dinner the night before at 7pm.
You’d then skip breakfast and go the whole flight without eating.
After you land, you can find a healthy restaurant for a solid meal.
Depending on how long your flight was, at this point you could have fasted for up to 24 hours.
If the thought of fasting that long scares you, or your goal is muscle building, pack some protein powder in a baggie, buy a bottle of water at the airport, and mix it together on the plane.
2. Get in a workout once you arrive at the hotel:
After a long day of traveling, the last thing you’ll want to do is hit the gym for a workout.
Even though you will not feel like doing this, once you complete your warm up and get the blood flowing, you’ll feel great.
If your hotel doesn’t have a gym, complete body weight exercises like push ups, squats, and lunges in your hotel room.
3. Complete your workouts first thing in the morning:
When on vacation, this is important as your workout will usually be the first thing to skip if you push it to later in the day.
Training on an empty stomach can help you burn stored fat for energy since your body is in major fat burning mode before breakfast. By skipping breakfast and hitting the gym, you can continue to use fat as a prime energy source during your workout.
Just make sure to eat breakfast right after your workout as your muscles are primed to absorb and put all the calories to work via muscle growth, repair, and recovery.
4. Water is your friend and so are your feet:
It’s ok to let loose and have a few drinks of alcohol. However, make sure you drink one glass of water for every drink.
Plus, your feet are your friend.
Rather than taking an Uber for a 1 mile trip to the shopping mall to buy some fresh new sneakers, walk.
